Two decades of reconnecting Sierra Leone with the Gullah Geechee

Amadu Massally founded the Sierra Leone-Gullah Heritage Association in the United States to reconnect African Americans of Sierra Leonean ancestry with their kin. In 2009 he returned to Sierra Leone after 26 years abroad and founded Fambul Tik, Krio for family tree. You tell us what you know, we research and advise, and you plan your visit.

What does Fambul Tik mean?

Fambul Tik is Krio for family tree. Krio is the lingua franca of Sierra Leone.

What is the Gullah Geechee connection to Sierra Leone?

Sierra Leoneans and Gullahs have known of their family connection for more than 30 years. Bunce Island was one of the leading ports of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and many African American ancestors passed through it.

Who leads FambulTik?
